Hiking Waterfalls Maine by Greg Westrich

Undercover Hiker's avatarHiking in Maine

I’m hard-pressed to think of anything that is as simultaneously calming and awe-inspiring as a waterfall. Maine’s rugged terrain, many wilderness areas, and large rivers make it a prime spot for waterfalls. There are many websites and apps that aggregate and “rate” waterfall hikes in Maine, New England, and beyond. We even added a Category to this blog for waterfall hikes, even though I still believe that the best waterfall views should come as a surprise. But our favorite travels, particular in the north Maine woods, Downeast, and western Maine, exist outside data service, and I have always enjoyed “analog” guidebooks, particularly those with maps and photos. Enter Falcon Guides’ Hiking Waterfalls Maine: A Guide to the State’s Best Waterfall Hikes, by Greg Westrich (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020).

We have used this guide for the last six months to enjoy waterfall hikes, from roadside stops to short hikes, to waterfalls…

Floating “Aerobats” Could be the Best way to Explore the Cloud Tops of Venus — Universe Today

The Union Generals Speak

Al Mackey's avatarStudent of the American Civil War

With this book, editor Bill Hyde gives us transcripts of the testimonies US generals gave to the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War regarding the battle of Gettysburg. Along the way Hyde provides his own comment to put the testimony in perspective and provides his interpretations of the testimony and the actions of the committee. His basic argument is the mean Radical Republicans wanted to get Major General George G. Meade removed and replaced with his predecessor, Major General Joseph Hooker, and they were willing to manipulate the record to make that happen. His viewpoint is the Radicals looked askance at any Democratic general, unless of course that general was Joe Hooker or Dan Sickles, or any other Democratic general who disagreed with Meade’s actions at Gettysburg. He writes, “The hearings on Meade, then, were not simply exercises in fact gathering. Far from it. For the most part…

Easiest Chicken Ever

Imran's avatarUncomplicated Cooking

This is beyond easy. It takes more skill to clean the chicken than making this simple dish.

If you are buying chicken from an online store, then get chicken with skin, cut into biryani size pieces.

Take a bowl and combine together salt, paprika powder, garlic powder. If you are comfortable with the amount of seasoning , simply put these powders on top of the chicken. Drizzle some olive oil. Drop in black pepper corns, chilly flakes…whatever you want except the cat.

In a glass dish, spread out thick slices of onions. Put chicken on top of it. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Put it into a preheated oven at 200C for about 30 minutes. Remove the foil at the half hour mark and then let it continue cooking for another 20 minutes. Remove the chicken pieces and return the dish with the onions and collected liquids into the…

Metallica Celebrates 40 years with Two Epic Concerts

Amazing band and an amazing career!

Drew's avatarDrew's Reviews

Congratulations to Metallica and the band’s 40 years of making heavy metal music.

The pioneers of monster rock celebrated their milestone over the weekend with 40 Years of Metallica a two concert event, one Friday (Dec. 17) and the second night on Sunday (Dec. 19), at the Chase Center in their hometown of San Francisco, CA.

Metallica retains a core membership with singer James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich who started things off in 1981 before bringing on guitarist Kirk Hammett in 1983 for their debut album Kill ‘Em All. Robert Trujillo joined on bass in 2003, replacing Jason Newsted. Cliff Burton, the band’s original guitarist was killed in in 1986 in a bus accident in Sweden during the Damage, Inc. tour. Guitarist Dave Mustaine, now of Megadeth, joined in 1982 for a year. A fun backstory you can find somewhere, if interested.

Those not lucky to score…
