Great Metal Albums of 1987: Dokken- Back for the Attack

Another review nailed by 80’s Metalman here. I have to agree that this is the worst of the classic four Dokken albums, although there are some good moments. Another thing to consider is the fact that Don and George were at each other’s throats by this point. Kiss of Death and Dream Warriors are the highlights for me.

Have you listened to an album recently and found it was much better than when you listened to it years earlier? I recently had that experience with Accept’s “Russian Roulette” album and I was hoping the same thing was going to happen when I listened to Dokken’s 1987 album, “Back for the Attack.” I didn’t hate the album when I first heard it in 1987 but I thought the album lacked punch. The problem is that after hearing it three times recently, my view hasn’t shifted.

“Back for the Attack” sums up what happens to many bands. They are hungry on their first few albums and that hunger is reflected in the music and the way the band plays it. This was definitely true on the first three Dokken albums. They were hungry and it certainly shows and I could see that hunger for myself when I saw them support…

Back to green

Another talented artist to share!

My journey into green with Paul Talbot Greaves continues with the second of our five assignments.

The focus of this assignment is tube greens or basically pre-mixed greens. Ahead of the course starting Paul indicated the colours that we’d be using on this course and, for the tube greens, they were Winsor and Newton Sap Green, Hookers Green and Viridian Green (or their nearest equivalent by other manufacturers)

I was fortunate that I already had all of these greens, though I only tend to use one of them, which is Viridian green which I carry in my sketching palette.

On the whole, I like to think that I should be able to mix all the greens I’ll ever need – but that’s why I also need this course, to help me to understand how I do that! Paul too acknowledged that tube greens can be a valuable shortcut, but they’re…

My roots as a history nerd run deep, probably from the time my mom began reading me the Little House series, when I was a child. Because my parents’ idea of a vacation often involved sailing or cross-country skiing, we saw a lot of Michigan, and often our destinations had historical significance, such as the lumberman’s camp at Hartwick Pines where we would ski, or the historic village in Fayette, which once housed an iron smelting operation and today is a very well-preserved ghost town, where we got weathered in on our sailboat for three days. As a kid, I loved these places for both their natural beauty, and that hallowed sense of something big having happened there.

Valentine’s Day Special: LOVE GONE WRONG

Jamie Day's avatarLost Souls of America

For Valentine’s Day, we here at Lost Souls of America wanted to try something a little bit different- a special episode where we share three stories with you about love gone wrong! One small thread that all of these cases have in common is that the family and loved ones of the victims all seem to look back and point out the red flags in these relationships. Behaviors that were controlling, possessive, secretive, manipulative, and just plain twisted. In some cases they expressed concern, but no one was ever fully able to pull these couples apart before it had deadly consequences.

These cases are all solved, but if you tune into Episode 13 of the Lost Souls of America podcast, Amelia will be telling you more about a current open investigation- Lauren Smith Fields. Please do listen to her story, and share often.

Our first story begins with a woman…

MY HOME FRIES

Alz355's avatarLive the Live ™

Home fries are a simple thing. But we’ve all been to a diner where the home fries they served tumbled out of a bag of frozen pre-cut potatoes, and tasted like cardboard. It’s time home fries got the respect they deserve.

Let’s get one thing out in the open from the very beginning: home fries were never meant to be low in calories! Mine are definitely not diet food! So, as you read this blog, if you’re shaking your head at the fat and calories, know that I know that you know!

3 lbs. Yukon gold potatoes, cut into approx. 1/2” cubes
1 lb. bacon, chopped
2 Vidalia onions, finely chopped
Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

I like my potatoes with the skin on, so I remove any blemishes on the skins, then cut the potatoes in approximately 1/2” cubes. Some can be larger, some smaller, and they…
