Brownies

The Joys Of Baking and Cooking's avatarThe Joys of Baking and Cooking

I am somewhat of a chocoholic and a rich, decadent brownie is my idea of chocolate heaven. Yes there is a lot of chocolate, butter and quite a bit of sugar involved here but you wouldn’t eat these everyday. Life is not worth living if there’s never room for a brownie.

You may think that are complicated to make but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, they are one of the simplest things to bake and don’t require many ingredients.

I’ve stuck to tradition here and studded them with walnuts but I so often change them up. Brownies are incredibly versatile so use whatever you fancy: maybe some more chocolate chips, a few swirls of peanut butter or keep them plain. All options are good.

My go-to brownie recipe which I’ve tweaked slightly from Feast by Nigella Lawson.

This Day in History:

January 7, 1942:

The siege of Bataan begins.

Facing an attack by 75,000 Japanese troops, General Douglas MacArthur withdrew all American and Filipino forces in Luzon, the Philippines, to the Bataan Peninsula. Once there, the allies held out against constant artillery barrages and desperate hand-to-hand combat for nearly four months. Upon surrendering, they would be forced to endure the Bataan Death March, during which thousands would die.

Missing in Massachusetts: The Case of Neo Maximus AKA Charlie Allen Jr.

Jamie Day's avatarLost Souls of America

Charlie Malcom Allen Jr. was born April 26 1985 in Haverhill Massachusetts to parents Ann and Charles Sr. He was the oldest of 3 kids and was particularly close with his sister Brittany. The family spent most of their time shared between their Haverhill home, and their summer home in Gloucester. He graduated from Haverhill high in 2003 and went on to attend University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth where he was majoring in Psychology and considering medical school after graduation.

Growing up, Charlie was always smart enough to do well in school without even trying. He was also athletic and outgoing, making him successful in almost anything he tried. His parents say that he put his whole heart into everything he did- if he was going to do something, he was going to be the best at it.

Two of Charlie’s many talents were Tennis, and video gaming. Now I’m…

Great Metal Albums of 1987: Def Leppard- Hysteria

Here is 80’s Metalman bringing me back to the glory days again. Gods of War is a great tune and I consider Excitable to be a hidden gem, as well. Cheers!

The challenge for me writing about Def Leppard’s 1987 “Hysteria” album is what I can I say or write about it which hasn’t been said before? I mean this album spawned seven singles, went platinum in many countries and gold in a few more as well as going to number one in the charts. Furthermore, the album was finally recorded four years after their previous sensational album, “Pyromania,” in which the band had to overcome the tragic accident which cost drummer Rick Allen his arm and Steve Clark’s battle with alcohol. There was also the problem with producers. Mutt Lange started producing but walked out and Jim Steinman didn’t last. The band tried to produce it themselves but Mutt came back and helped the band make history. So, in many ways, this album was a remarkable triumph for the band.

As soon as I heard the opening riffs to “Women,”…

Gerald

Gerald, you did it

The trifecta plus one

Just six weeks old

All because you had enough

You thought you could obliterate them

Like they never existed

The world knows you did it

Your actions indefensible

Ah, but that technicality

It’s saved you, Gerald

Only in this country could a savage such as you escape

Gerald, you did it

You’re actually living the high life

But are you?

How’s your neck feel, Gerald?

From watching your back

Remember your former extended family?

The ones you caused great anguish?

They’re still hurt, Gerald

And they’re angry

Do you know what happens to anger and hurt that festers for decades?

It generates determination

Persistence

They’re not going away, Gerald

They’re coming for you

And if the one technicality that is your lifeline ever erodes…….

Little Scraggy Trailhead

Months of planning, preparation, almost obsessive gear shopping, & training are are leading up to this one day. Sunday, May 9, 2021. Way back in February I had been excited to hear back from Leslie, one of the shuttlers from the Colorado Trail Foundation list, the first time I could feel that this dream journey might actually happen. She could meet me at Little Scraggy Trailhead at the end of segment 2 where I would leave my truck, and drop me at northern terminus at Waterton Canyon.

I’ve seen lots of commentary from other hikers that the first 100 miles of through the foothills from Denver towards the more scenic higher elevations, beginning with a 6-mile dirt road walk up Waterton Canyon, is kind of boring and uninspiring. Not so for me, as I remember riding bikes there with my friends as a kid, probably at 10…

TM9629 Slow Drift 30×50 oil on panel

What compels me to keep visiting Hamlen Woods? I think it is the nearly hypnotic trance I fall into as I walk the perimeters of the creeks and ponds, all linked and providing rich habitats. I become hyper aware of sounds, color, and especially the way time seems to slow down as I watch leaves float and spin on the currents, or the way pine needles hover on the surface, collect, and then disappear. Maybe it’s the way silently observing the pond takes me completely out of myself, as if I weren’t there. Or maybe it’s getting to know the place so well that every tree limb, lily, and frog feels like an old friend. I just love it. Details from Slow Drift below. Enjoy.
