How Hiking Trails Are Made

Interesting read here…….

Phil's avatarReally Good Hiking

Hiking trails are an integral part of hiking. They provide a way to safely get from one place to another without getting lost or running into any dangerous obstacles on the trail. There are many different types of hiking trails, but they all have some things in common-they need to be well designed and constructed for safety purposes, they should blend with the natural environment that surrounds them, and they should be sustainable so that future generations can enjoy hiking too.

Hiking trails are an important part of hiking, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some hiking trails can be very dangerous because there is no clear path for hikers to follow through the terrain.

There were times when I was hiking that I had to stop hiking altogether just so that I could figure out where we should go because it was not clear and obvious. This…

Tomorrow

Feel sorry for our children

Times will be trying, indeed

When their moment of rule commences

The state of their environment undetermined

One can only imagine the fragility of a world that will greet them

If circumstances are as they are now…….

Apologize to them today

For we’ve done it to them

Valley Forge, PA

Today’s random artistic re-blog. Tugs at my heartstrings when a little History is included!

Autumn is upon Valley Forge. The stone barn shown here was built and added to in the 19th c. It has the remnants of a Palladian window in the wall below the ridge, dating it to the Federalist era of architecture.

This Day in History

Samuel Morse publicly demonstrates his electric telegraph for the first time.

https://septisphere.wordpress.com/2014/05/15/how-samuel-morse-invented-the-telegraph/

With his partner Alfred Vail, Morse demonstrated the electric telegraph at the Speedwell Ironworks in Morristown, New Jersey. The telegraph’s range was only two miles, and the first transmission was witnessed by a crowd of locals. The first message publicly transmitted said, “A patient waiter is no loser.”

The Disappearance of Bianca Piper

Stories of the Unsolved's avatarStories of the Unsolved

EARLY LIFE:

Bianca Noel Piper was born as the youngest of three girls on December 26, 1991. Her parents, Shannon Tanner and David Piper, divorced in 1993, and David moved to Fredericktown, Missouri to work as a truck driver. Shannon began dating a man named Jim Felt, and in October 2004 they moved with Bianca and her siblings to Foley, Missouri.

Bianca was diagnosed with ADHD and severe bipolar disorder at a young age, conditions for which she was hospitalized. As a result, she suffered mood swings, periodic anxiety attacks, aggressive tendencies and issues with self-control. She was to take several medications on a daily basis, and when on them it was difficult to tell she struggled with her mental health. However, when off them, she became disoriented and had hallucinations.

At the time of her disappearance, she was an eighth-grader at Winfield Middle School who loves horses, Barbie and the colour…

NFL Wild Card Playoff Predictions

The second season is here!  It’s one and done for the remaining 14 teams from here on out, with a trip to Super Bowl 56 at the forefront of everyone’s mind.  However, to get there, these 12 teams must win three playoff games, starting with the ever-exciting wild card weekend!  Here are my picks for this weekend’s games:

AFC:

Las Vegas at Cincinnati

The Bengals pounded the Raiders back in week 11.  And while I believe Cincinnati to be the better team, and on a bigger roll (week 18’s meaningless game notwithstanding), there is something about the Raiders that we all must respect.  With all the turmoil surrounded Jon Gruden and Henry Ruggs how did interim coach Rich Bisaccia get Las Vegas into the postseason?

I still like the Bengals to end their decades long postseason victory drought, however.  Expect it to be much closer than week 11, however.

Cincinnati 28 Las Vegas 20

New England at Buffalo

Round three for these bitter AFC East rivals, with teams splitting the regular season matchups, both winning on the road.  The Patriots rode their ground game in western New York, winning the “Wind Game” despite only attempting three passes.  In the rematch at Foxboro, the Patriots’ defense couldn’t get off the field, setting the stage for the Bills to repeat as division champions.

I like a close one here, as well.  I give Bill Belichick the coaching edge over Sean McDermott.  I like the Bills’ talent just a tad bit more.

Buffalo 20 New England 17

Pittsburgh at Kansas City

The Chiefs steamrolled the Steelers in week 16, and while Ben Roethlisberger’s impending retirement has been a nice sentiment in Pittsburgh’s last two victories, I believe it will end here, and it will end with a thud.  Kansas City’s defense, despite its struggles the past two weeks, will be the difference here.

Kansas City 27 Pittsburgh 13

NFC:

Philadelphia at Tampa Bay

How in the world did the Eagles make the playoffs?  Is it me, or did they fly under the radar all season?  Good for them for making it.  Their reward?  Opening on the road against the defending Super Bowl champions.

Tampa Bay 31 Philadelphia 14

San Francisco at Dallas

Was Sunday (week 18) fun or what?  The 49ers had to climb out of a 17-point hole to win a topsy turvy overtime game on the road against the Rams to secure their spot, just one of many nailbiters with playoff spots on the line.

The Cowboys are frustrating.  They have dropped 56, 51, 44, 43, and 41 points in respective weeks, sandwiched around head scratching losses at home to Denver and a struggling Arizona team, as well as putting up 9 points in a dud at Kansas City.

I like the 49ers here.  I believe the guts Jimmy Garappolo showed has earned the respect of an entire team coming together at the right time.

Upset of the week.

San Francisco 26 Dallas 23

Arizona at LA Rams

The division nobody wanted to win.  The Rams could have won it outright and taken the number two seed in the NFC with a win.  Alas, they blew a 17-point lead and lost to the 49ers in overtime.  That opened the door for the Cardinals, who proceeded to lose at home to 7-10 Seattle.

The Rams will be angry in this one and will take it out on an Arizona squad that has lost its way.  But it won’t be easy.

LA Rams 27 Arizona 24

Great job!

After the Christmas indolence, a walk was proposed. Organising a walk in our family can require diplomatic skills far beyond my capabilities. My wife wanted to walk by the canal which meant we wouldnt get lost and me get angry at the lack of signage. She also reckoned that it wouldnt be too muddy. My daughter didnt want to go too far to get to the walk and I wanted to go somewhere to see some different scenery. I think my daughter’s partner would have preferred to stay put.

I selected a route which, I hoped, met all the specifications. After an early lunch, waiting for the rain to subside, we set off. There was a low winter light which gave great contrasts and shadows and suited me well.

We came up a low hill to a wooded area where there is a derelict Chapel, originally built in the 1500s…
