Drawing trees

Awesome work!

I’ve been busy since the holidays so haven’t spent much time in the studio. I have a show which opens later this week so much of my time has been spent sorting and rounding up artwork for the show. We’ve also had some pretty chilly weather with temps in the single digits but only a couple of inches of snow.

So I decided to take a break from new painting work to practicing drawing some trees. Winter is a great time to capture the skeletons of the trees as the leaves are long gone. I didn’t have to go far, actually just my own front yard.

The sketch of the hackberry tree is charcoal on pastel paper. Approximately 13.5 inches by 11.5. Winter is a great time to draw tree skeletons.

The first tree is a large hackberry. I had never heard of this tree before we moved here but…

This Day in History

January 20, 1937:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt is sworn in to his second term as US President.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution made the president’s term begin on January 20th. Roosevelt was the first president to begin a term on this day. Before the 20th Amendment, the president’s term began on March 4. The change reduced the duration of the lame-duck session of Congress.

Murdered in DC: The Case of the Freeway Phantom

Jamie Day's avatarLost Souls of America

In April of 1971, 13 year old Carol Spinx was home alone with 3 of her 7 siblings- twin sister Carolyn, and older sister Evander. Their mother Alenteen was a single mom who was out visiting a friend, but the kids knew mom’s strict rules for when she wasn’t home- don’t open the door, don’t leave the house, stay put, behave, I’ll be back soon.

The girls had a 24 year old sister Valerie who didn’t live with them anymore, but was visiting a friend at a nearby apartment. Valerie came over and began pestering her sisters to run to the store for her, go pick up a few things. Eventually Carol said “she’s driving me nuts, I’ll go”, and she headed a couple of blocks away to the nearby 7-11.

Carol actually ran into her mother on the way to the store as she was walking home, so her…

A Wave

https://www.kendalldodgechryslerjeepram.com/understanding-jeep-wave/

It seemed innocent enough

To wave at the man in the pick-up truck coming the other way

Even though I had no idea who he was

It’s just what we do out here in the country

Our small town

You wave

And he waved back

Isn’t is ironic that the man was on his way to a job

In order to feed his family

Ironic, indeed

That the man I shared a moment of innocent pleasantries with

Was a man contracted to kill me?

Chuck Berry – Too Much Monkey Business

One of the best!

Badfinger (Max)'s avatarPowerPop... An Eclectic Collection of Pop Culture

Love the Chuck’s bright guitar intro! Chuck is the father of rock and roll guitar. Everything comes from him. Rockabilly, pop, rock, hard rock, and heavy metal…Chuck is at the core.

The guitar influence he has over rock music is obvious but his rock and roll poetry shouldn’t be forgotten either. While Keith Richards was listening to his guitar closely…Bob Dylan was also listening to his poetry about life.

Too Much Monkey Business was released in September 1956 as the B-side of Brown Eyed Handsome Man. I love how Chuck spits out the lyrics to this song. Bob Dylan did something simiiar on Subterranean Homesick Blues a little later in the sixties.

Berry made up a word in this song, singing, “I don’t want your botheration.” This wasn’t the first time he used his own language: In Maybellene he sings about motorvating.

Too Much Monkey Business peaked at #9…
