This Day in History

March 24, 1958:

Elvis Presley is drafted into the US Army.

He had been granted a deferment to finish the movie “King Creole,” and was drafted after it was complete. Presley joined the Army at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, in a media circus. He served in the Army until 1960, stationed mostly in West Germany. While there he met his future wife Priscilla Beaulieu. He also became dependent on amphetamines during this time, which contributed to his early death in 1977.
