February 1, 1865:

Abraham Lincoln signs the 13th Amendment.

The Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime. It was one of three Reconstruction Amendments; the 14th and 15th Amendments provided for equal protection of all citizens and addressed voting rights, respectively.
