  1. Great article and these precious little wonders took a hit last year with that huge die off from a fungus causing swelling to their tongues and subsequently starving! I figured out immediately upon hearing this sad even in the news that people thinking they are helping them with feeders have not realized how the ants crawling over the feeders carrying the fungi up from the earth onto the feeding structure and thusly contaminating it! I have put out a feeder this year but outside of buying a more elaborate mote type feeder I use some bearing/axle grease and apply it to the pole the feeder hangs from so the ants have no way of climbing up it. I hope most bird watchers this year are using the any proofed feeders or even my basic method to make sure we protect the Hummingbirds! Also keeping the feeder clean with a regular sterilization and fresh homemade nectar from white cane sugar helps enormously too.
